Who pays the customs duties & taxes?
Shipments outside of the USA may incur customs fees depending on the destination country. The fee may vary depending on your order value, country limits, and other factors based on the product itself. Your end customer is responsible for these fees. Any fees are paid to appropriate customs agency by the end customer.
When setting your retail prices or manually editing them, keep in mind that customs agencies often calculate duties/fees based on the declared retail price.
If you collect VAT in your store, note that Printful doesn’t currently offer a way to display paid VAT or a VAT ID on shipping labels or packing slips.
What is VAT?
VAT stands for Value-Added-Tax. It’s placed on each stage of the supply chain (eg. production, sale) for goods and services. VAT applies to orders that ship to a customer in one of the EU member states (based on “ship to” address).
You can think of it like sales tax. For orders fulfilled in the US, we charge a sales tax if the order is going to a state where we’re located. We also charge VAT on orders that are fulfilled at our Europe location with a destination address in the European Union.
We calculate VAT with the following formula: (Printful product price – discounts + shipping price) * VAT rate %.
Key differences between VAT and sales tax:
- VAT is added to every step of the process for the manufacturer, distributor, and seller. Sales tax is only applied to the value of the product sold.
- VAT is calculated based on Printful’s price, sales tax is calculated based on your retail price.
- VAT applies to delivery charges.
How long is shipping for orders within the EU?
For orders shipped from our Europe location to a European destination, shipping can take between 5-10 business days after fulfillment. For orders shipped from our Europe location to non-EU regions, it can be between 10-20 business days.
Go to our Shipping page to see the common delivery time for other locations.
Check out this FAQ for more info about countries we ship to from our Europe location.
Do you offer shipping with tracking?
Yes, all Printful’s shipping methods have tracking. Note that the quality of tracking may differ for some local carriers.
What happens if a package wasn’t delivered to my customer, but the tracking states that it was?
If the package was marked as delivered by the carrier, but the customer reports they have yet to receive it, Printful won’t cover the cost of reshipping or refunding the order.
There may be cases where the delivery was made, but the package was left in an unexpected location at the customer’s address. Customers should reach out to the carrier and inquire if any additional details were left by the delivery person. For example: “Left under the table on the back porch.”
If your customer is unable to locate the package, you will need to place a new manual order to have it reshipped. We’re not yet able to assist with filing claims with shipping carriers but hope to do so in the future!
Where are returns sent?
The return address of your store is by default Printful’s. However, you can change it to your own address if it’s in the USA and not a PO box. If your customer wishes to return the product and your address is set as the return address, then you will be responsible for your own returns.
To change your return address, go to Settings > Returns.
If you leave Printful’s address as the return address, we’ll notify you via email that the package has been returned once it reaches our facility, and based on the reason for the return, together we’ll decide what the next steps should be.
Packages sent out from our US fulfillment centers are returned to our Charlotte facility. Its address: 11201 Ed Brown Rd, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28273.
Meanwhile, packages sent out from our Europe location are automatically returned to our Europe fulfillment center. Its address: Lidostas parks, Marupes novads, Latvia LV-2167.
You can find our returns policies here.
Note: It’s not possible to use your own address for DHL shipments. All orders sent through DHL get returned to our facilities.
My order shows it is being returned to sender, what now?
There are a few reasons an order can be returned to sender but most often it is due to an undeliverable address. Other instances include the package being unclaimed at customs or refused/returned by your end customer. You will receive notice once the order arrives back to our facility. We would advise contacting your end customer to determine how they would like to proceed and contact us with an updated address if you wish to have the product reshipped. New shipping charges will be applied for orders that have been unclaimed at customs, returned by your customer, or had an incorrect address originally provided.
What if the order is lost in the mail?
For packages lost in transit, all claims must be submitted no later than 4 weeks after the estimated delivery date. But no worries! We’ll cover the costs of reprinting and shipping a replacement order for you.
We may ask for your help before doing that, like confirming with your customer that the shipping address was correct. It would also be good to double check that your customer got in touch with their local post office to try locating the lost order.
Keep in mind that if tracking information states an order was delivered but your customer thinks they haven’t received it, we won’t take responsibility and reship that order. In that case, any replacements would have to be at your expense.
You can check out our return policy for up-to-date details about reshipments.
Why don’t canvases or framed posters ship to Australia?
In order to protect its ecosystem from invasive foreign species, Australia has strict laws for what can be imported into the country. Wood products are especially regulated as they can contain timber borers, insect pests, bark, and other potential biohazards.
The regulations and treatment processes for importing wooden products into Australia are incredibly difficult to maintain, so for that reason we don’t ship canvases or framed posters there.

Why is my shipping label in euros?
We normally print shipping labels in USD. But for orders fulfilled in Europe, we print the value in euros so it’s easier to go through customs checkpoints and mail sorting centers within Europe.
We use whatever retail price and currency is on your store for your packing slips.
Are the packaging materials recyclable?
The poly bags used in our packaging are recyclable, low-density polyethylene, FDA and USDA compliant.
